JUNE Dinner Meeting Guest Speaker: Gerard Kath
topic: “Weather you do- or weather you don’t”
|
|
|
This will be a practical workshop on how seasonal factors affect our businesses.
The principle is used to emphasise the need for awareness and adaptability in management, planning self-motivation and awareness in relation to all types of changes in causal and influential factors. In teams, we will define the problems and offer solutions.
We are all affected by the weather and any strategies to help overcome this problem will benefit us all. From a personal perspective, if it rains, is too cold or hot, a wedding can be uncomfortable and may actually ruin the couple’s special day. |

If you are a farmer and the roads are cut, what happens to your produce? If you are in hospitality, what happens to your profits if there is a cyclone or flood? The more we think about what is likely to happen, then the easier we can plan, and the fewer surprises we have. |

bio: Born in Gympie and following Year 12, I attended Marcus Oldham College in Geelong, Victoria achieving an Advanced Diploma in Farm Business Management. In 1991 I was the Student President. With my wife, Cordula and our three children, we moved to Mareeba in 1995 to manage the family papaw production farm.
After six years, we started our own farming business in Mareeba in papaw/papaya production.
On two properties of 270 hectares, other production includes small crops and grass seed and a Brahman breeding herd. Last year, we were recognized as one of the top three operations in Australia producing over 100,000 cartons per year, employing 15-20 people.
Since 1996 I have been an executive member of Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetables, serving two years as Treasurer. I am a Founding Director of Papaya Australia and Chairman since 2006. I am also a local Fire Warden.

president's letter
Hello Everyone,
Well ladies, what about our talented and unassuming Angie Lewis. A swathe of awards, well known and respected in the floral industry, and her skills are available to us. Thanks Angie for ‘Shining’.
And thanks also to Sgt. Kate Jago and her practical and very handy tips. Remember:
1. Never leave a venue alone at night
2. Have your car keys ready in your hand
3. Check the back seat
4. Get in and lock all doors
5. When you get home (where you have left the lights on) check the area first with your headlights.
6. Have your house keys ready before you get out of the car
7. Walk confidently
Thanks Kate for your informative presentation.

Lorraine Petersen gave us 43 ways to use WD40 with the following promising to test it out:
- Angie Lewis – Restore and clean chalkboards
- Sarah-Kaye Page – Loosen stubborn zippers
- Maria Pesavento – Keep ceramic/terra cotta garden pots from oxidizing
- Ann Cork – Remove black scuff marks from the kitchen floor
- Nadine Kung – Keep rust from forming on saws, saw blades, and other tools
- Lesley Gilbride – Remove lipstick from clothing
- Kate Jago – Remove moisture from distributor cap
I tried No. 14 – to keep glass shower doors free of water spots – and spent the next hour and a half scrubbing the oil off! We will await your results ladies.
Annual General Meeting:
September means election of a new committee. To find out about the role you may be interested in, please contact the incumbent or myself. We encourage you to participate; it really is fun and offers a lot to each individual.
Get involved and keep TBWN as the chief body that represents Tableland women in business. We have had a bit of a topsy-turvy time with memberships and renewals so have made the decision to have one date only for the membership year. Simply, membership will go from September 12, 2009 to September 12, 2010. This is because you must be a financial member to stand for Committee plus it will be a big help in terms of financial and administrative management. Joining fee $55, Renewal fee $40.
We have listened to your suggestions and can happily report that for the next five months, our dinner meetings will be held at different venues. We hope by offering a variety of menus and venues, this will increase attendance numbers. It is a bit of a reach to attend monthly but remember, dinner is not just about enjoying good food - it is a great opportunity to network for your business and it is tax deductible. Plan for it in your advertising budget. Don't forget members may have two free ads per year in the newsletter. Make it work for you!
Look forward to seeing you in June for our team exercise "Weather you do or Weather you don't" with Gerard Kath, President of Papaya Australia. This is a vital exercise that will define how the weather affects our business and prepare us to deal with the effects. To get our lateral thinking caps on, there will firstly be a fun Mensa Puzzle. Please note the change of venue for June 24. Now at the Tree Kangaroo Cafe, Malanda (at Malanda Falls). Venue is licensed.

Four rock-solid points to ensure your marketing will become recession proof:
Focus on your ideal customer – develop a customer profile with detail descriptions of their drivers and buying processes
Apply multi-channel marketing – you must have at least four marketing channels delivering results for your business: Referral Marketing, Networking or Personal Selling, Email Marketing, Web Presence
Engage in relationship building with your customers – make your customer feel important and appreciated. Customers move on if they feel neglected or undervalued
Test, test and test again – measure and track results against your business objective to determine what is working and what needs to be dumped. For further info, www.pmzmarketing.com
Small businesses will now be able to claim a bonus tax deduction of 50% - up from 30% previously of the cost of eligible assets acquired between December 13, 2008 and December 31, 2009 and installed by December 31, 2010.
