president's report
Thanks to our guest speaker, John Bottoms, Bottoms English Lawyers, for his enlightening address on the importance of succession planning for your business as well as making a will at a personal level. John is very passionate about this complex issue and demonstrated the need for professional advice as opposed to a DIY Will Kit. The subject certainly struck a chord not only with dinner guests but also with the venue operators and staff who also appreciated John’s presentation. As he said, don’t put if off any longer – secure what you have worked hard for - make an appointment with your Solicitor now.
It was Carmel Pacey’s ‘Time to Shine’ and again, I’m amazed by the accomplishments of another of our members. Carmel provided statistics on what we breathe in and what our skin absorbs when we use cleaning products. It’s true isn’t it – we check food ingredients but take little notice of the chemicals we use in the house, many of us experiencing headaches, rashes, asthma, all sorts of problems and don’t relate it to our choice of product, let alone think of changing them.

‘My Habitat Essentials’ products are completely biodegradable and non-toxic. They contain no petrochemicals, no chlorine, no preservatives and no emulsifiers. For products that really work, better health and to help our environment, it’s time for a change.
Lorraine Petersen outlined her role as Meet & Greet Officer as did I as President in the lead up to the AGM. I express my unreserved appreciation to the present Committee. They have given their time, creative thoughts, energy and expertise without hesitation. It has been a joy to work with them.
TBWN is a marvellous group that continues because of the support of each and every member. This last year has just flown by. We have had some inspiring guest speakers and discovered the talents of members in their ‘Time to Shine’ segments. International Women’s Day was a financial success and Christmas in July was the icing on the cake. We have made new friends, shared lots of laughter, and hopefully have contributed to making TBWN the foremost body representing business women on the Tablelands. The Committee sincerely thank you for your support and encouragement and we wish the new committee continued success.
Leslie Tye-Parsons
President

business tips
Carmel Pacey was our ‘Time to Shine’ member and here is a follow up of her topic:
Detox your home!
As women we’re generally responsible for what comes into our homes and what stays out. There are now over 100,000 synthetic chemicals on the market, over half of them never tested for their toxicity to humans. When we buy household cleaners and insecticides it’s hard to know exactly what we’re getting because it’s not usually on the label, but these are synthetic petrochemicals which are implicated in very serious diseases like cancer, asthma, nervous system disorders and hormonal dysfunction.
|
 |
Petrochemicals have only been around for about 50-60 years, and in the same time period, we’ve seen dramatic increases in these diseases worldwide, along with serious degradation of our environment. Of course there are other factors, but exposure to toxic household chemicals plays a very large part – not least because our exposure is constant and the chemicals are in direct contact with our skin and mucous membranes through aerosol deodorants, cleaning and insect control products.
We need to find products that are safer for our families and our environment than this – products made from natural plant-derived ingredients. Before petrochemicals, that’s what people used for thousands of years without harm to themselves or the environment. The use of vinegar for cleaning and disease prevention has been recorded as far back as ancient Sumeria, 7,000 years ago. Similar records exist for herbal and other plant-based preparations.
Personally I stopped using all household chemicals years ago. I wash myself, including my hair, with liquid castille soap made from olive oil, and I wash up with it too. For clothes, I use a simple laundry powder from plant-based ingredients. My hair and skin are in much better condition since I made these changes, and I feel much healthier.
For the house, I’ve developed products based on natural vinegar and pure essential oils - My Habitat Essentials. They include WebMaster to stop spiders from building webs, CleanUp, MouldMaster and DeBug for cleaning and getting rid of mould and pests while making the house smell delightful, and Ambience natural air fresheners – all without toxic ingredients, and all uplifting emotionally and physically due to fragrant essential oils. I use only 100% pure natural essential oils, organic if possible.
These products are now available in stores on the Tableland and in Cairns and will soon be distributed much more widely. Look for them in your local supermarket or health food shop, and detox your home. |

Struggling to reach a deadline? People working to meet deadlines are more likely to suffer health problems. Solution: Organisation is the key. Use the power of to-do lists, labelled folders, post-it notes and a clean desk. Prioritise tasks and do the important ones in the morning when you’re more alert. Take breaks especially when you are really busy. Say no when you have too much work – better that than say yes and do a bad job.
Do you have children at High School looking for a traineeship? Contact Roger Millroy, Tableland Manager, Skill360 Australia on 40464000.
Network, network, network. Loathe it or love it but just do it. Can’t beat that personal connection! |
